Locke, California

Locke, California is the only town in the US built exclusively by the Chinese for the Chinese and remains the last standing rural Chinatown in the United States. Situated in the southern agricultural region of Sacramento County, it is a true gem of a town, rich in cultural heritage, and rightfully belongs to the National Register of Historic Places. Here are some pics from our quick stop in Locke while on the way home from Thanksgiving in Sacramento:

In Isleton, California, birthplace of Pat Morita aka Mr. Miyagi from the movie Karate Kid, birds of a feather really do flock together! This was a great find while driving through the Sacramento River delta region. See if you can count how many there are! ;)

Great pics, Cory. My faves are the sleeping dog and the birds. Very cool stuff.

And Locke looks like such an interesting place, almost a ghost town. You could say it's "Locked" in a time warp.

Looks like Ricky Martin has been to Locke also as his name was written in graffiti.

Sarah Mac, thanks for stopping by. You seem to travel around quite a bit which is something that I wish that we could do more of these days... I must say that I particularly enjoyed your Salton Sea and Linden to Longbarn photos. And what excellent commentary to compliment your photos (something which is missing on my blog, huh!). Beautiful!! The guy right below your comment, Eric, mentioned that he has been wanting to go to Salton Sea and after seeing your photos I definitely want to make a trip out of it. I'll have to do some research on when and when not to go and get out there one of these days. Eric, when do you want to go?

Eric, it is very much like a ghost town. Actually, I heard that everybody keeps their doors unlocked!

K-mo, there are about 80 or so people who are said to live in Locke, ten of which are Chinese, but I would be surprised if there really were that many people living there. What I heard was that most of the former residents of Locke are now living in a town called Rowland Heights. Ever heard of it? ;)

Ryan, Ricky Martin from Chico, that is. I wonder if he shook his bob-bon in Locke.

Tyson, you are very pretty in a bikini!

Your Harleys??

Unfortunately, not ours, but my friend sort of looks like he could be a Harley owner! I just wouldn't do the bike justice. ;) Locke and a few of the other towns along the river seemed to be popular stopping points for the bike riders. There's nothing like riding through the delta area and stopping off at each local watering hole!
