evandalism

The Tower Bridge is one of the most recognizable landmarks in Sacramento and as of late has become a victim of vandalism, or in this case, what I'd like to call evandalism--you know what I'm talking about. It's not hard to guess who might be responsible for this but I will be one to say that it needs to stop right away. Please do not spread your message on a landmark! On so many levels this is just wrong and does not sit well with me at all. I'm not here to bash Christianity. I do recognize that it is not a religion that stuck the "Jesus is Lord" and "Hallelujah" stickers to the Tower Bridge and surrounding area but most likely a group of young, naive kids out to do "good." Good deeds and effectiveness, well, that's definitely something that is open to interpretation but from my perspective I cannot get past the weirdness of it all. "Jesus is Lord" and "The Prince of Peace is Lord" stickers all over the place--that's just weird!!! ;) For the record, if the message were of political nature or a local band advertising themselves I would feel no different (so please no religious debates on my blog.) Bottom line, public property is not to be destructed. Thank you very much.

So taking a step back from the heaviness of the topic, everybody does react differently to things like this and I must say that my reaction included a lot of laughter and wondering what the hell these people were thinking. Vandals for Jesus? Hmm... So anyway, enjoy the message and feel free to share your thoughts.

By the way, the cost of painting the Tower Bridge is estimated at $3.5 million.

There are at least two places in the Sacramento area where "Repent CA" is torn into the grass on the side of the freeway. And then white chalk (or paint) fills the letters that are ripped out from the grass. Powerful stuff man, just like these stickers. (sarcasm).

As a Christian myself, yeah, I think it's a bit silly and probably some kids from a youth group trying to do their thing. A whole lot better than graffiti though, I'd have to admit. I'm not condoning it, but at least they used stickers and not paint. Apparently though you were not converted. I'll have to tell them that placing stickers on XBs is more effective. :)

I also saw a chalk message a little while back near my house that said something like "FEMA is government assisted suicide." That one didn't last too long because I don't think their grass rippers are as talented as the evangelists.

Stickers ALWAYS win me over.

Make a sticker, and I'll fully adopt our cuse because I cant resist the indescribable joy and pelasure of peeling of that protective backer and just finding the perfect place to

STICK STICK STICK it!

Really, who can deny their power... If Hitler employed more stickers, he might have won.. good thing he didnt have the forsight. Thank GOD the stickers are now in the hands of Jesus

I am part of a small group of people who actively tear the "REPENT CA" signs down. Last night I was driving to the lowe's at sunrise/greenback and spotted a guy dancing around with one of these signs on the corner next to Krispy Kreme. I decided to confront him and give him back a couple of the signs I had ripped up earlier that were still in my car. I let him know that as long as he keeps putting them up we'll keep pulling them down. He let me know that I should get "right with god"... whatever that means. This guy wasn't a kid by the way, he was a grown man in his late 30's or early 40's I would say, hard to tell because it was dark out.

It's these extreme fundementalists that are destroying our society. They don't care about the vandalism or starting needless wars, and really why should they. They seriously believe that Jesus is coming back any day now to take them and the other drones to heaven so they can hang out with god for eternity. Only a child would believe such a silly story, the real adults in this world know that there is no such thing as god.

To Anonymous:

To my regret I only now just received the email notification that you commented on my blog which looks like is about two weeks after the fact. If I could have replied earlier I would have. While I agree with you that nobody should be vandalizing public property I can't quite take the leap with you from a person not caring about vandalism to not caring about starting needless wars. I'm pretty sure that you are suggesting that it is radicalism or as you put it, extreme fundamentalists, who are quote on quote, "destroying society," but I seriously question your extreme actions. Let's look at you for a moment. To me, it's pretty radical to go tearing down a sign, rip it up and confront a person about why you think they are in the wrong. My challenge to you is to come up with a way to actually benefit society. Rather than tearing down somebody else’s cause why not find your own constructive (not destructive) activity that will bring about positive change. What do you think? Also, I strongly advise you to respect the beliefs of others, whether you agree with them or not. You yourself have set a standard for what you think adults should be like, so if you are a so-called “real adult,” then maybe you shouldn't be labeling those who believe in God or Jesus as silly. Your statements are inflammatory and completely unfounded. It's time for you to become a "real adult" and do something good for a change.

Sincerely,

Cory

I agree with your words to Anonymous, Cory. There are much better proactive things to do that will benefit society and help build a greater good rather than try to destory the work of some fundamentalists. That's probably not what Anonymous lives for, although he/she is clearly pissed. But why though, that's the big question? And why the assertion that fundamentalists are the root of all evil? Are they really, or are they simply a scape goat here?

If some "fundies" want to get their message out that way, go for it. That's part of living in a free society. It is a bit bothersome that this is so offensive to Anonymous that he/she has taken up a "crusade" against it.

I happen to believe in the "sillines" of a god existing, but I surely don't support the "Repent CA" deal going on. I even commented once about it on my blog about how odd the practice is of the REPENT CA dealio.

By the way, I totally disagree too that it is extreme fundamentalists (of which I am not by the way) that are tearing apart our society. I think we have some issues in our culture, and we see folks from many walks of life tearing things up. And the 2nd coming of Jesus in not any excuse to kill right now and start wars. That is absurd. A fantastic book that takes God out of politics is "God's Politics" by Jim Wallis. This could be a great read, and is also a fantastic resource for those who would think that conservative christians should be republicans (or extreme fundies).

I've seen the "Repent CA" signs around as well. I was on my way home from work tonight on hwy 65 from Rocklin to Citrus Heights around 6:15pm, there was a guy driving a Chevy Suburban, with "Repent CA" written on the tailgate in bright yellow/green, and some other religious garbage on the rear window in the same color. License plate was something like "PSLM699"... on the front of the Suburban, was a huge piece of posterboard with the "Repent CA" thing on it, taped to the front grille.. I've seen the signs taped to overpasses, I've seen the guy over by Krispy Kreme (Sunrise/Greenback) holding the sign, and I've seen stickers placed on various poles around town. It's really quite annoying and trashy looking. I'd like these zealots to take a bit more pride in the area we all live in, and stop putting their crap all over the place.
